Normally fall festival Akimatsuri 秋祭りis to celebrate harvest and thank for namely ujigami (a guardian god or spirit of a particular place in the Shinto religion) who is an ancestral guardian god.

Usually Japanese are not conscious of its a religious meaning very much but they like to celebrate festival like a traditional event of the year. From young to old all Japanese enjoy festivals.

The majority of Japanese people today lack a sense of belonging to religions, and many Japanese also consider themselves to have ‘no religion,’ although they actually engage in religious rituals.- Wikipedia日英京都関連文
