One of my favorite events is Otsukimi. You can enjoy this moon viewing in Klyde Warren Park on October 15, 2016. I will see you at kimono booth. You can see demonstration from 7:30-8:30. You can taste Tsukimi dango; Moon viewing dumpling, Ikebana, tea ceremony, Stage performance, dance and etc! It’ll be nice to enjoy Japanese fall custom!
お月見: Moon Viewing in fall. Japanese people see rabbits pounding rice to make mochi もち;rice cake. What do you see in the moon?
This custom has long history but I didn’t know when it started and looked for Wikipedia. About 1000 years ago, Japanese people enjoyed the swinging moon reflected on the surface of the water! How romantic!
China and Japan have had the custom of appreciating the moon since ancient times, and particularly in Japan it is said that the custom has existed since*the Jomon period; after the festival of moon viewing was introduced from China around *the Heian period, the nobles had Kangetsu parties and boating parties (to enjoy the reflection of the moon swinging on the water surface from a boat, instead of viewing the moon directly) in which they would compose poems and enjoy drinking. 例文帳に追加
*the Jomon is about B.C. 5-6 *the Heian is 794-1192 A.D
